Important Information about Wisdom Teeth
What most people refer to as “wisdom teeth” are actually a third and final set of molars that usually emerge when a person is in his or her late teens or early twenties. For some people, wisdom teeth don’t pose any problem because they have room enough in their mouths for this third set of molars. But for other people, wisdom teeth can cause multiple problems. The teeth can become impacted, for example, if they come in at an angle or only partially emerge. Wisdom teeth that are impacted have the potential to cause damage to the jaw and other teeth. It’s also hard to reach and clean around your wisdom teeth, which makes them more susceptible to collecting bacteria.
All in all, wisdom teeth can definitely cause problems for some people, which is why Dr. Robertson will sometimes recommend that they be removed to avoid the associated difficulties. Whether or not your wisdom teeth need to be removed can be determined by a routine X-ray.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
If you do need to have your wisdom teeth removed, it’s important to keep in mind that this is a surgical procedure, and that means you’ll need post-operative care to heal properly and avoid complications. Right after the surgery, our dental staff will place a gauze pad over the extraction site that should be left on for a certain period of time. Dr. Robertson will also recommend other post-operative precautions, such as NOT drinking from a straw and rinsing your mouth periodically. You should limit your daily activities on the day of the procedure, and take pain medication as needed and as prescribed by Dr. Robertson.
